Welcome to the Centre for Criminology website
Criminology is a broad subject area that encompasses the study of crime, criminals, victims and the criminal justice system, including the police, court systems and prisons.
We offer expertise in the delivery of teaching, research and consultancy within all of these subject areas.
The Centre for Criminology was established in 2001 to provide a physical base for research and teaching in criminology within the University.
All criminology staff have rooms at the centre and use the centre as a base for student supervisions and research.
Lectures and seminars are held in specialist lecture theatres and teaching rooms nearby.
Our Mission
The centre’s mission is to be a leading centre for criminology and to strive for excellence in both its teaching and research.
It aims to achieve these objectives while at the same time providing a stimulating and facilitative teaching and research environment.
Excellence in Research
The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) found that 90% of the work of the Social and Administration Unit (of which Criminology is a part) was internationally recognised or excellent, with 5% getting a 4* world leading rating.
The Unit was also ranked 26 out of 66 universities in terms of research power which placed it ahead of some of the traditional universities such as Manchester, Leicester, Goldsmiths College, and Strathclyde.
Criminology was reported as a division having ‘particular strengths’.
